Thank you for doing your part to keep our communities safe!

Did you know that most people who misuse prescription drugs get them from family, friends, and acquaintances? Proper disposal of medications that are expired, unwanted, or no longer needed helps to keep our communities safer.

Twice each year, in the spring and fall, law enforcement agencies across the U.S. hold Drug Take Back events in their communities. This free and anonymous service provides an easy way to safely dispose of prescription and over-the-counter medicines. This month’s Drug Take Back Day event, held on October 23, resulted in 624.8 lbs of medications collected in Hancock County, and 147.8 lbs in Washington County; Maine statewide collection overall was 24,780 lbs.

Missed the event? Drop boxes are available in communities across Washington and Hancock counties and offer safe, anonymous disposal of prescription drugs. Click here for a list of locations to find a drop box near you.

The next Take Back Day event will be in Spring 2022. Learn more about how you can get involved.

You can make a difference by keeping track of the medicine you have, by rethinking where and how you keep your medications in your home, and by safely disposing of any unused medications.  Click here to read more about ways to secure your meds and safely dispose of them at home.
