Pick a Better Snack
Our four, Maine SNAP-Ed Nutrition Educators are greeting the new school year with busy calendars and big smiles! This year, our Nutrition Education Team is offering a mix of in-person, virtual, and pre-recorded lessons for schools and childcare sites across Hancock and Washington counties. Classroom educators can choose between three preschool and elementary curriculum series, “Pick a Better Snack,” “Eat Well Play Hard,” and “iGrow Reader.”
Pick a Better Snack (PABS) is the staple SNAP-Ed curriculum for grades K-3 based on the engagement of students in a new fruit or vegetable every month. Students will see, touch, taste, and smell a new fruit or veggie in each class. They will learn how the food is grown, how it is used, and why it is good for them! Students will also be introduced to My Plate, the visualization tool that represents a healthy diet, produced by the USDA. To learn more visit https://www.myplate.gov/.
“Eat Well Play Hard” offers lessons focused on improving the nutrition and physical activity behaviors of preschool age children and their parents/caregivers by encouraging positive role-modeling. The “iGrow Reader” curriculum is geared toward students in preschool through grade 2 that uses children's books, paired with a nutritious snack and physical activity to promote healthy behaviors.
SNAP-Ed educators at Healthy Acadia offer year-round cooking and nutrition classes in partnership with schools and organizations throughout Hancock and Washington counties. To learn more or schedule a class, contact Allie or Kirsten in Washington County, or Nicole or Despe in Hancock County.
