Lettuce Talk About Food Waste
Food waste is estimated to be between 30-40 % of food supply in the US. Food waste is a product of lost or thrown away food. By making a few small changes at home you can create more food while reducing waste. Consider making a list before shopping, keeping the fridge organized, and having a weekly leftover night.
Another fun way to reduce food waste at home is growing food from scraps. Pictured are growing Romaine lettuce heads that may have otherwise been thrown in the trash.
Next time you have a salad, try these simple steps to grow lettuce on your windowsill too!
When cutting your lettuce, leave around 2 inches above the stem. (photo 1)
Place the stems into a clear container of water, any will work. Don’t forget to change your water daily! (photo 1)
Find a home for your container in a sunny window and watch it grow! (photo 2)
After 12-15 days, your lettuce should be ready to enjoy!
Using a similar process you can also test your green thumb with other veggies such as carrot greens, green onions, garlic, and celery. For more tips & tricks on growing food from scraps check out Food Revolution Network.
