East Machias Couple Provides Needed Food Storage Space for Safe Harbor
Safe Harbor Recovery Residence for Women in Children in Machias was in need of more food storage space for the home’s residents. Kim and Tom McClure of East Machias, who have been longtime supporters of the home, learned of the need and quickly stepped up to help.
“We had a fridge that we weren't using and [we] felt so good about finding a perfect new home for the fridge at Safe Harbor," shared the couple. They love that it's working for the residents. “Kindness is so healing and I truly believe in it," said Kim Mclure.
“We are so very grateful for Kim and Tom's continued support of Safe Harbor!” said Katie Sell, House Manager and Community Health Coordinator with Healthy Acadia. Downeast Community Partners, who owns and maintains the building, quickly arranged for installation of an additional power outlet, as well as new flooring to accommodate the donated appliance.
Safe Harbor Recovery Home for Women and Children is the only certified recovery residence in Washington County and serves women from across the region. The house provides wraparound support for women in all stages of recovery, and is one of the only houses in the state where they can live with their children. Launched and operated by a collaborative effort between Healthy Acadia, Downeast Community Partners, Community Caring Collaborative, and AMHC (Aroostook Mental Health Services, Inc.), Safe Harbor is supported in part by MaineHousing.
Safe Harbor is a place for women to live and grow with their children while seeking recovery from substance use disorder. Our mission is to provide a safe, supportive, affordable living environment for women in recovery.
Donations to Safe Harbor are used in support of the house, its programs, and the women who live there. Often, residents arrive with very few resources, and it can take some time for them to find employment and/or enroll in supportive programs. With contributions, Safe Harbor is able to meet the basic needs of residents and their children and provide a clean, safe, supportive environment.
