It's Finally Summer! Enjoy the Sunshine Safely

The warm, sunny days of summer in Maine are a welcome opportunity to get outside. Whether you're hiking a favorite trail, working in the garden, spending the day on the water, or enjoying our beautiful beaches, it's important to protect yourself from ultraviolet (UV) radiation, the leading preventable cause of skin cancer.

Adopting these simple habits can go a long way in protecting you from the harmful effects of UV exposure.

  • Apply a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher 20–30 minutes before heading outdoors, and reapply every two hours or after swimming or sweating. Replace sunscreen that's expired or has been open since last summer, as it may not provide full protection.

  • Wear protective clothing, including a wide-brimmed hat, UV-blocking sunglasses, and tightly woven or UPF-rated clothing. Don't forget to protect your lips with an SPF lip balm.

  • Seek shade whenever possible, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when UV rays are strongest.

  • Check the daily UV Index before spending time outdoors so you can plan ahead and take appropriate precautions.

Even in Downeast Maine, where summer feels all too short, UV rays can be strong, even on cool or cloudy days. Protecting your skin isn't just about preventing sunburn. Nearly 5 million people in the United States are treated for skin cancer each year, and most cases are linked to UV exposure. Taking a few simple precautions today can help reduce your risk of skin cancer, cataracts, and other UV-related health problems for years to come.

While you're enjoying the season, take a few minutes to become familiar with your skin. Check regularly for new or changing moles or spots, and talk with your health care provider if you notice anything unusual. Early detection is one of the best ways to improve outcomes.
