Welcome, Kamiwan Oliver

Please join us in welcoming Kamiwan Oliver to the Healthy Acadia team! 

Kamiwan joins Healthy Acadia as a Food for All Intern in Washington County. She will work with Downeast Restorative Harvest Community Farm in Machias and Folklore Farm to assist with planting and harvesting vegetables and coordinating the distribution of these crops to the Washington County Jail, food pantries, and meal programs.

Kamiwan, what prompted you to join the Healthy Acadia team?

I want to help local people struggling with food insecurity.

What most inspires you about Healthy Acadia's work and your new role? 

I love the push to get real, local food to people. It feels like real on-the-ground work that helps people in a wonderfully tangible way.

What most inspires you on a personal level?

Helping my community and improving things for everyone around me.

What is your favorite thing to do, or place to be, in Maine, and why?

One of my favorite places in Maine is my own backyard! I have a wonderful garden and a chicken coop/run. It is my sanctuary.

Kamiwan graduated from Washington County Community College with an Associate's in Business Management, and currently resides in Perry, Maine. “I have always grown my own food and acted as an advocate for those in my community. I am also a member of the Ending Hunger Advisory Committee, as a nominee by Family Futures Downeast and the Community Caring Collaborative.

I am also a classically trained pianist! I spent a long time studying the great composers of the eras, but my heart is with Latin music- tangoes and rhumbas. There is so much energy and life in Latin music: it's not as rigid as some classical music!”
