Holiday Moments at Safe Harbor Recovery Residence

The holiday season has been a busy and joyful time at Safe Harbor Recovery Residence in Machias. Moms and children living at Safe Harbor have been celebrating together by cooking special meals, decorating holiday cookies, and enjoying time playing in the snow.

Staff have shared in these moments, supporting families and watching the simple magic of the season unfold. These everyday experiences — cooking, laughing, and spending time together — help build connection, routine, and a sense of home for women and children who are on their recovery journeys.

Safe Harbor is the only certified recovery residence in Washington County that serves women and their children. It provides a safe, supportive place to live while women work toward stability and long-term recovery. The program is managed through a partnership between Healthy Acadia, Downeast Community Partners, Community Caring Collaborative and Aroostook Mental Health Center.

In addition to housing, Safe Harbor offers help with finding employment and connecting to supportive programs and services. Located near historic downtown Machias, the residence is part of a caring community. Nearby partners, including the University of Maine at Machias and Downeast Community Hospital, help strengthen the network of support available to families.

Safe Harbor’s vision is to create a community where women in recovery, and their children, have access to the resources they need to heal, grow, and thrive. To learn more about Safe Harbor and how you can support this important work, click here.
