Funding Available to Prevent Student Homelessness Through New Pilot Program

In a groundbreaking move to address the pressing issue of student homelessness in Maine, the recently signed State Budget introduces a pilot program that grants School Administrative Units (SAUs) and the State Office of Education in the Unorganized Territory (EUT) access to emergency financial assistance. This initiative, effective since October 25, 2023, aims to provide a safety net for vulnerable students at risk of homelessness.

Under the pilot program, SAUs and EUT now have the opportunity to access emergency financial assistance of up to $750 per student identified as being at risk of experiencing homelessness. Based on the formula created, this provision ensures that every SAU with schools has, at a minimum, $750 available to address the needs of students facing housing instability.

The success of this initiative hinges on spreading awareness and advocacy within communities. Champions are needed to get the word out and advocate for this available funding to support Maine families and youth. SAUs/EUT will opt to accept or decline this funding in Grants4ME, and to use the funds within the following budgeting categories: Rental assistance/housing, critical home repairs, utilities, or other McKinney-Vento Allowable Uses.
