Community: Collaboration and Resilience
April 4-10 is National Public Health Week.
Join American Public Health Association (APHA) and Healthy Acadia in celebrating the many public and private spheres working together to make individuals, families, communities, and our nation healthier, stronger, and more resilient. This year’s theme is, “Public Health is Where You Are.”
Each day this week, we are highlighting a community health program or sharing an inspiring story from a community member or partner that aligns with APHA’s theme of the day.
Where we live impacts our communities’ health, and each one of us has a role to play. Together we make health happen.
Community: Collaboration and Resilience
Community encompasses every aspect of our lives — it’s where we live, work, learn, and play. To make an impact on public health in your community, you can volunteer with a local nonprofit or donate to increase access to health supports, including basic needs, healthful services, and more. You can get information on how your state uses public health funding and advocate for laws and other initiatives that address health disparities. You can encourage your local government to support healthy community design and to fund programs to prevent unhealthy living conditions. You can engage your friends, family, colleagues, and elected officials on health topics on social media.
Making even a single action to be more a part of your community by supporting the social, emotional, mental, or physical health of your neighbors or other community members can also significantly benefit your own wellbeing. Research shows that people with greater feelings of support and inclusion within their networks may live longer, respond better to stress, and have stronger immune systems than those who are isolated from their communities.
At Healthy Acadia, two of our seven guiding values* are collaboration and health equity. We believe that only together we can address health disparities across our communities and create opportunities and environments that help all people thrive.
We invite you to get involved to strengthen our community and to increase access to health and health resources in our region for all. Join with Healthy Acadia - together, we make our community stronger.
Together we make health happen.
