Celebrating Youth Engagement and Community Health Champions at Jonesport Elementary School

Today, we have an exciting story to share with you about the power of community engagement, youth empowerment, and the importance of physical activity for healthy minds and bodies. On June 2, 2023, our team at Healthy Acadia had the privilege of attending the Jonesport Elementary School's (JES) garden open house. It was a delightful event that marked the inauguration of their brand new raised garden beds, made possible by their inspiring journey, a significant win in the WinterKids statewide winter competition, and an amazing elementary school teacher.

Last year, the students of JES showcased their enthusiasm and determination by participating in the WinterKids statewide winter competition. This wonderful initiative encourages youth to engage in fun and healthy outdoor activities all year long, ensuring they remain active during the winter months. Jonesport Elementary School emerged as the deserving winner of the competition, earning themselves a well-deserved reward of $10,000.

With their winnings in hand, the JES community made a thoughtful decision on how to allocate the funds. Part of the prize money was dedicated to establishing a new garden space within the school premises. These raised beds would not only provide an opportunity for students to learn about gardening but also offer them a hands-on experience of growing (and eating!) their own fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

One of the remarkable individuals behind this incredible success story is Marni Crowley, an elementary school teacher at JES. Marni played a pivotal role in leading the WinterKids effort as well as spearheading the development of the community garden. Her commitment and dedication to promoting physical activity for healthy minds and bodies were recognized when she was nominated as a health champion by our Healthy Acadia community - all of you! - in 2021.

As part of Healthy Acadia's 20th year anniversary celebration, Marni was featured in our inspiring short film titled "Together: Community Health Champions." The film showcases individuals who have made a significant impact on their communities by inspiring and engaging others in ways that support and promote health and well-being. Marni's exceptional work with the students at Jonesport Elementary School earned her a well-deserved place in this esteemed group of health champions.

With teachers like Marni Crowley leading the charge, students are motivated to stay active, fostering healthy minds and bodies. Congratulations to JES and thank you, Marni, for all the amazing work that you are doing!

Are you intrigued to learn more about Marni and her inspiring work with JES students? We have great news for you! "Together: Community Health Champions" may soon be making its way to your neighborhood - we are working to schedule showings in locations across our region this summer and fall. This film offers an intimate look into Marni's dedication to promoting physical activity among her students and highlights the positive impact it has had on their lives. Stay tuned for the upcoming showings, and get ready to be inspired!
