Building Health and Hope: Safe Harbor Recovery Residence

It’s hard to believe that Healthy Acadia is celebrating 25 years of making health happen across Downeast Maine.

Over the past 25 years, we’ve seen what is possible when neighbors, community partners, and local organizations come together to build healthier communities. As we celebrate how far we’ve come, we’re also looking ahead to what’s next.

This year, we invite you to build health and hope alongside us through our Health and Hope Campaign. Our goal is to raise $1.5 million by Dec. 31 to help meet important community health needs and support Healthy Acadia’s work for years to come.

One part of this campaign is supporting Safe Harbor Recovery Residence for Women and Children in Machias.

A safe place to heal and grow

In the summer of 2020, Healthy Acadia opened Safe Harbor to provide a safe, supportive home for women with substance use disorder as they work toward recovery.

Safe Harbor offers something especially important: mothers can bring their children with them.

Since opening, Safe Harbor has provided housing and wraparound support to 50 women and 51 children from Washington and Hancock counties and beyond.

Residents have access to a network of support designed to help them build stability, strengthen their families, and move toward the future they want. This includes recovery coaching, resource navigation, connections to clinical treatment, transportation to appointments, positive social opportunities, parenting classes, employment resources, and more.

By providing a stable home alongside these supports, Safe Harbor helps create opportunities for women and their children to build healthy, hopeful futures together.

Help us build health and hope

As we celebrate 25 years of Healthy Acadia, we’re reminded that lasting community health is built one person, one family, and one community at a time.

Our goal is to raise $100,000 for Safe Harbor this year. A gift of any amount can help ensure that women and children have access to the safe housing, resources, and support they need to move forward.

Will you help us build health and hope?

Together, we can continue making health happen for our friends, families, and neighbors.
