Folklore Farm
Since 2012, Folklore Farm has been a cornerstone of Washington County’s food system, cultivating vibrant, nutritious vegetables and honoring the values of sustainable, community-based agriculture. What began as a small for-profit farm has grown into something even more powerful: a mission-driven, community-serving farm stewarded by Healthy Acadia as part of our Healthy Food for All programs.
In 2025, guided by a deep commitment to mutual aid, food justice, and resilient local systems, Folklore Farm transitioned from a traditional business model to a project dedicated to growing food for all. Now, as a food bank farm and a proud project of Healthy Acadia, Folklore Farm focuses its growing power on nourishing communities throughout Washington County and beyond. Every seed planted and every harvest gathered supports the wellbeing of our neighbors through local food security organizations.
We’re Building a Stronger, More Resilient Food System.
The Folklore Farm mission is to serve our community as a fresh, local food source for everyone. It’s also a community hub for collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and solidarity in agriculture.
Folklore Farm is a key player in Healthy Acadia’s broader network of food security programs, working hand-in-hand with:
And dozens of local partners across Washington County
Farmer Dan Cunningham, Folklore’s dedicated steward, plays a key mentorship role in Healthy Acadia’s Downeast Restorative Harvest Project (DERH). His deep knowledge of the land and generous spirit are helping to shape the future of food sovereignty in Downeast Maine.
Feeding Our Communities
The majority of the produce grown at Folklore Farm is distributed directly to local food pantries, Maine Senior Farm Share Program, a culturally-relevant farm share program in partnership with Mano en Mano, for nutrition cooking classes with members of the Passamaquoddy tribe at Motahkomikuk (Indian Township).
Plant starts and greenhouse support: Folklore Farm provides healthy plant starts each season, jumpstarting crops for DERH and other community growers.
Mentorship and place-based guidance: Dan shares practical, time-tested insights on soil health, crop planning, pest management, and seasonal rhythms.
Shared resources & aligned values: From equipment and seeds to shared labor and ideas, the collaboration reflects a deep commitment to mutual aid and community-rooted agriculture.
Good food, grown well, can nourish whole communities. Together, we are creating a food system that reflects the values of equity, sustainability, and shared prosperity.
