Folklore Farm
Folklore Farm in Cherryfield, Maine, is a diversified vegetable farm with deep roots in sustainable agriculture and community-based growing. The farm is an integral part of the Washington County food system providing fresh and nutritious produce since 2012. What began as a small for-profit venture has grown into something even more powerful: a mission-driven, community-serving farm stewarded by Healthy Acadia as part of our Healthy Food for All programs.
In 2025, guided by a deep commitment to mutual aid, food justice, and resilient local systems, Folklore Farm transitioned from a traditional business model to a project dedicated to growing food for all. Now, as a food bank farm and an enthusiastic project of Healthy Acadia, Folklore Farm focuses its growing power on nourishing communities throughout Washington County and beyond. Every seed planted and every harvest gathered supports the wellbeing of our neighbors through local food security organizations.
Feeding Our Communities
In 2025, approximately one third of the produce grown at Folklore was distributed directly to local food access partners, through the Maine Senior Farm Share Program, through a culturally-relevant farm share program in partnership with Mano en Mano, and for nutrition cooking classes with members of the Passamaquoddy tribe at Motahkomikuk (Indian Township). and thanks to support from the statewide Farm to Neighbor Campaign. Our goal is for the majority of produce grown to be distributed through food access programs and partners across Washington County, as well as via SNAP dollars and the Mainers Feeding Mainers program.
Folklore Farm supports food security efforts through out the region, offering:
Plant starts and greenhouse support: Folklore Farm provides healthy plant starts each season, jumpstarting crops for Downeast Restorative Harvest and other community growers.
Mentorship and place-based guidance: Farmer Dan shares practical, time-tested insights on soil health, crop planning, pest management, and seasonal rhythms with interested community members.
Shared resources and aligned values: From equipment and seeds to shared labor and ideas, this collaboration reflects a deep commitment to mutual aid and community-rooted agriculture.
Good food, grown well, can nourish whole communities. Together, we are creating a food system that reflects the values of equity, sustainability, and shared prosperity.
