LETTERS TO EDITOR

To the Editor:

As a Family and Consumer Sciences teacher at Mount Desert Island High School, I teach a class called Farm to Table in which students learn about the local food systems, grow food in the school garden, visit local farms and cook with their products.

I couldn’t teach this popular class without the generosity and support of the organizations and small businesses who take the time out of their busy schedules to meet with my classes. I’d like to thank the folks at Bar Harbor Farm, Peggy Rockefeller Farm, Beech Hill Farm, Hollander and DeKoning, Triple Chick Farm, Healthy Acadia’s Gleaning Initiative, Bar Harbor Food Pantry, Blue Barrens Farm and Mainely Worm Bins for coming to our class or inviting us into their space and sharing their knowledge and expertise with us.

Understanding where our food comes from is the first step toward sustainable agriculture. We are fortunate to have so many wonderful food producers and organizations who care about our community and our planet.
