Safe Schools, Safe Communities Initiative Needs Your Help on November 5

The Maine Gun Safety Coalition has launched the Safe Schools, Safe Communities citizen initiative to pass an Extreme Risk Protection Order (ERPO) law, often called a “Red Flag Law,” in Maine. This law would allow family members to petition the court to help a loved one who is in crisis and a potential danger to themselves or others. If sufficient evidence is presented, the courts can temporarily limit a person’s access to deadly weapons.

To make the ballot, the Coalition needs 500 volunteers to gather signatures INSIDE the polls on Election Day, Tuesday November 5.

Here are the two ways that you can help today!

An Extreme Risk Protection Order law in Maine will allow both families and law enforcement to petition a court to temporarily limit someone’s access to dangerous weapons when they’re in crisis. Family members are often the first to know when a loved one may potentially pose a threat to themselves or others. Empowering families to take action, through a court, will help save lives and prevent future tragedies.

Maine’s current law failed to prevent the tragedy in Lewiston. The Safe Schools, Safe Communities initiative is a far better tool that will save lives and help keep our kids, families, and communities safe.

But to make this happen, they need your help now more than ever.

To get the Safe Schools, Save Communities initiative on the ballot we need to collect 75,000 signatures, and the best way to do that is to collect signatures inside the polls on Election Day, Nov. 5. It's the easiest signature gathering possible with thousands of registered voters ready to sign.

The Coalition needs 500 volunteers to hit our goal. Will you sign up to gather signatures on Election Day?
