Safe Harbor Gets Cooking with Allie

Since mid-December, SNAP-Ed Nutrition Educator Allie Cook has been leading a Cooking Matters for Adults class with residents at Safe Harbor. Safe Harbor is Washington County's first recovery residence for women and their children. The house provides a safe, supportive, and affordable living environment for women in recovery.

Once per week, Allie delivered groceries for residents to cook together at home. Residents learned about MyPlate, eating whole grains, and shopping for healthy foods on a budget through live virtual classes. After learning basic nutrition information, they cooked healthy recipes together each week. Recipes like Turkey Tacos, Sweet Potato Shepherd Pie, and Barley Jambalaya were enjoyed by all.

“It's been great to get involved with Safe Harbor,” said Allie. “I have really enjoyed getting to know all the residents. Every week there are tons of laughs and good times, just how cooking should be.”
