Virtual Session to Explore Risks of Teen Vaping

Healthy Acadia, in collaboration with the City of Eastport, WSHD 93.3 FM Tiger Radio, and Shead High School, invites parents, teens, and caregivers to explore the facts and myths about VAPES aka ENDS (Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems) during a virtual session on Wednesday, December 2, 2020, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The session is part of an ongoing collaboration between Healthy Acadia and the City of Eastport to promote tobacco-free communities and develop smoke-free policies for community spaces. Earlier this year, city councilors Hailley Bradbury and Jeanne Peacock worked with Georgie Kendall of Healthy Acadia to develop a 100% smoke-free policy, which was passed by the Eastport City Council with a 4:1 vote on September 9, 2020. The City was awarded a $1,000 mini-grant to support policy implementation from Healthy Acadia with funding from the Maine Prevention Services initiative of the Maine CDC, Department of Health and Human Services. These funds will support city employees to erect tobacco-free signs in parks, the waterfront walkway, and recreational areas of the city. There is also funding to help clean up discarded cigarette butts around the city.

Parents and students who attend the virtual, "Facts and Myths about VAPES" workshop on Wednesday, December 2, 2020, will be entered to win one of two, $50 drawings from Bay City Garage fuel or R&M IGA in Eastport. Mini-grant funding will also be made available for student competitions with Shead High School and WSHD 93.3 FM Tiger Radio for public service announcements and a poster competition aimed at educating youth and the public about the dangers of tobacco use and vaping.

Healthy Acadia’s Georgie Kendall, Community Health Coordinator in Washington County, will facilitate the interactive discussion and provide plenty of time for questions. There is no cost to attend and pre-registration is not required. Use this LINK to join the session at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, December 2: https://zoom.us/j/7156076804.
