Healthy Acadia to host free screening of documentary “Seeds of Change” in Eastport

EASTPORT, Maine — Healthy Acadia will host a free community screening of the acclaimed documentary film Seeds of Change on Friday, Feb. 6, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Eastport Arts Center, 36 Washington St.

Filmed over two years, Seeds of Change tells the powerful story of lifelong farmer Mark McBrine and several incarcerated men who grow their own food in a five-acre prison garden, exploring how farming, connection to the land, and shared purpose can support health, healing, growth, and second chances.

The event will feature the full screening of the film, followed by a talk and casual question-and-answer discussion with Mr. McBrine, along with members of the Downeast Restorative Harvest team.

Downeast Restorative Harvest is a community farm initiative launched in 2022, led by Healthy Acadia in partnership with the Washington County Jail, the Maine Department of Corrections, local organizations, and community members. Inspired by McBrine’s work and developed with his guidance, the Machias-based farm grows fresh vegetables, fruits, and herbs for the county jail kitchen and for food assistance programs across the region.

The farm engages incarcerated individuals, people in recovery, agricultural educators, and volunteers in hands-on food production, helping participants build job-ready skills while experiencing the physical and mental health benefits of working outdoors. The program aims to strengthen local food systems, support successful reentry into the community, and foster confidence, responsibility, and hope.

Additional screenings of Seeds of Change are planned in Milbridge and Machias. Dates and locations will be announced soon.
