Local Grocery Stores Join Project Sticker Shock
Healthy Acadia and local businesses are partnering in efforts to deter furnishing alcohol to minors through Maine’s Project Sticker Shock. In November, the following stores in Hancock County participated in the project:
Southwest Food Mart in Southwest Harbor
Hannaford in Ellsworth
Hannaford in Bar Harbor
Hannaford in Bucksport
Project Sticker Shock is a community and statewide effort to raise public awareness about the risks of underage drinking and to strengthen the deterrent effect of the law against providing alcohol to minors. Stickers warning about the penalties for furnishing alcohol to minors are placed on multi-packs of beer and cases of other beverages containing alcohol that might appeal to underage drinkers.
During November, Healthy Acadia’s Mia Petrini affixed over 40 bright orange stickers to alcohol beverage cases at each participating store to remind purchasers that providing alcohol to minors is a crime. Creating more awareness is important - according to our most recent survey data, one in four high school students in Hancock County reported consuming alcohol in the 30 days before the survey.
Thank you, store managers, and the teams at these businesses for playing a vital part in our community and helping to prevent underage drinking in Hancock County!
