Seven youth leaders from Healthy Acadia’s DownEast Teen Leadership Camp (DETLC) recently traveled to Lewiston to take part in the annual Youth Leadership Conference hosted by Maine Youth Action Network. Held March 12–13, 2026, at Southern Maine Community College, the conference brought together young people from across the state to learn, connect, and grow as leaders.

In addition to the seven attendees, four more DETLC youth stepped into leadership roles, helping to plan and facilitate the event. Their involvement reflects the strong commitment of Downeast youth to creating positive change in their communities.

The conference focused on building leadership skills and supporting youth voice on issues that matter. Participants attended interactive trainings on topics like substance use prevention, restorative practices, student voice in education, and social justice. Throughout the two days, youth gained practical tools, expanded their knowledge of public health issues, and strengthened their confidence to take action at home.

Just as important as the learning sessions were the connections. The conference created space for young people and adults from across Maine to build relationships, share experiences, and support one another in their work.

Outside of the conference, the group made the most of their time together. They stayed at a lakeside home in Litchfield, where they cooked meals, played games, and enjoyed meaningful conversations. A highlight for many was an evening at Just-In-Time Recreation, where the group spent time bowling, playing pool, enjoying the arcade, and sharing pizza.

Experiences like this help youth grow not only as leaders, but as connected, confident individuals. By stepping into new environments, building relationships, and practicing leadership skills, DETLC participants continue to strengthen their ability to create healthier, more vibrant communities.
