Transgender Workshop and Events in April
March 9, 2015

What does it mean to be “transgender” or gender nonconforming?

How do we talk about gender expression and what issues arise for people who experience their gender differently than the gender they were given at birth? How can we begin to understand and celebrate gender differences? What does it look like to be supportive of gender nonconformity?

During the second week in April, these questions and many more will be considered in a series of events for health professionals and the public sponsored by the MDI Hospital Lisa Stewart Women’s Health Center and Healthy Acadia, with contributions from College of the Atlantic, Bar Harbor YWCA, University of Maine Machias, and Equality Maine.

The morning of April 9, Frank Brooks, PhD, LCSW, a psychologist with expertise in treating transgender clients, will lead a workshop for healthcare practitioners from 9 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. at the Lisa Stewart Women’s Health Center. Participants may receive 3 CEU credits. The workshop is $35 and space is limited. Please preregister with ann.worrick@mdihospital.org.

The evening of April 9, from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. in Gates Auditorium, College of Atlantic will host a keynote address by Jenn Burleton, Director of TransActive Gender Center in Portland, Oregon, and a panel discussion with Ms. Burleton, Gia Drew of Equality Maine and Maine Transgender Network, Zack Paakkonen, an attorney and advisor for Trans Youth Equality Network, and local community members. A reception will follow the presentation.

On April 12th at 2:00-4:00, Reel Pizza will show Lady Valor: The Kristin Beck Story, a documentary about former U.S. Navy Seal Christopher Beck in a new mission as Kristin Beck and her journey as she lives her life truthfully as a transgender woman. The film will be followed by a discussion led by Jenn Burleton. Tickets are $10 and proceeds will benefit Healthy Acadia’s Gender Diversity Project.
