Turkey-A-Thon Raises $31,212 for Food Pantries in Washington County
October 21, 2015

Friday, October 16, 2015. Undeterred by a brisk wind and intermittent cold rain showers, volunteers from schools, businesses and community organizations spent the day (mostly) outdoors alongside employees from Classic Hits 92.7/95.3 FM Radio and Healthy Acadia, collecting donations for local food pantries during the eleventh annual Turkey-A-Thon.

Teams stationed at eight locations throughout Washington County enthusiastically encouraged passersby to support families in need, noting that $12 could purchase a turkey for a family. Broadcasting live from V.L Tammaro in Calais, Classic Hits 92.7/95.3 FM Radio kept the momentum going throughout the day, even encouraging a little friendly competition as collection sites reported their tallies hourly via phone.

By 5pm, the groups had raised $31,212 – the equivalent of 2,601 turkeys – surpassing this year’s goal of 2,500 turkeys. Calais Regional Hospital, a regular contributor to the campaign, raised $5,232 – their largest donation to date. Healthy Acadia, collecting donations at the Four Corners Shop ‘n Save in Columbia for the first year ever, reported that more than $1,700 was collected at that location. Classic Hits Account Executive Jeff Demmons, who coordinates the annual event, noted that more schools participated this year, as volunteers and donors, than in any year previous. Students from Narraguagus High School’s Outdoor Club raised $772 and Calais Elementary School collected $303 - $295 of which was raised by one kindergarten student. When interviewed, the student proudly reported that she had not only solicited donations from neighbors she knew, but, “…even [from] some I didn’t know!”

Every dollar raised during the Turkey-A-Thon event will be used to purchase gift certificates from local grocery stores that will be distributed to all Washington County food pantries. The gift certificates will help ensure that local families in need enjoy a healthy holiday meal. Classic Hits 92.7/95.3 and Healthy Acadia would like to thank all those who generously donated and/or volunteered their time during the event.
