August 31, 2015

WHAT: New Farmers’ Market in Franklin
WHEN: Saturday, 9am to 1pm
WHERE: Franklin Trading Post, 33 Black Woods Road (Rt. 182), Franklin, Maine

FRANKLIN – Partners have come together this summer to open a new farmers’ market at the Franklin Trading Post on Saturdays. This market is part of the Healthy General Stores Initiative, a partnership of Healthy Acadia and CEI, with support from Newman’s Own Foundation and EMHS. This initiative strives to bring healthy food options to rural communities.

Dedicated local farms, including Shalom Orchards, Schoodic View Farm and Cave Hill Farm, provide fresh produce that is grown within miles of the market. A bounty of tomatoes, beans, cucumbers, chard, kale, garlic scapes, lettuces, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, herbs, some delicious preserves and more are available for purchase.

In addition to fresh, local produce and products, many Saturdays feature taste-testings of produce and new recipes using local produce. Sample recipes have included Kale and Garlic Scape Pesto on Noodles; Massaged Kale Salad with Walnuts, Parmesan, and Lemon-Mustard Dressing; Massaged Kale Salad with Almonds, Craisins and Balsamic Vinaigrette; Veggie Roll-ups, and more.

“We are thrilled to be able to give community members greater access to fresh, healthy foods through this farmers market,” stated Sandie Dubay, Healthy Acadia’s Project Coordinator for the Healthy General Stores Initiative. “The response to the farmers’ market has been strong, and everyone has raved over the samples and the delightful flavors of the locally grown produce!”

Join community members and local farmers at the Franklin Trading Post Farmers’ Market every Saturday from 9am to 1pm. Rain or shine - the locally grown produce is great!
