Hancock and Washington County Schools Receive Community Health Grants from Healthy Acadia and Partners

Healthy Acadia and the Downeast Community Transformation Collaborative are pleased to announce the recipients of grants to implement Farm to School, Safe Routes to School/Access to Exercise, and Coordinated School Health initiatives [full list of awardees below].

22 schools in Hancock and Washington Counties have been awarded grants to implement Farm to School projects, which must lead to lasting changes in the school that support healthy eating and nutrition. Projects include starting or expanding school gardens & greenhouses, increasing connections with local farms, improving nutrition education, and more.

9 schools in Hancock and Washington Counties have been awarded grants to implement Safe Routes to School/Access to Exercise initiatives, which must target lasting changes in the school that support walking and biking to and from school and/or access to exercise. Their grants will fund projects such as promoting use of and increasing access to bicycles, increasing physical activity opportunities in afterschool programs, increasing education trails around schools, and more.

9 Hancock and Washington County schools or school systems have been awarded grants to implement Coordinated School Health projects, which must coordinate activities that address at least one component of a Coordinated School Health Program (the 8 school health components include: Health Education; Physical Education; Health Services; Nutrition Services; Counseling, Psychological, & Social Services; Healthy & Safe School Environment; Health Promotion for Staff; and Family/Community Involvement).

The Downeast Community Transformation Collaborative is coordinated by Healthy Acadia, in partnership with the Passamaquoddy Tribal Council at Indian Township, Washington County-One Community, Washington County Council of Governments, the Hancock County Planning Commission, and the University of New England. The Collaborative was awarded a two-year Community Transformation Grant from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to improve health and reduce chronic disease throughout Washington and Hancock Counties.

Through the Collaborative, Healthy Acadia and partners are implementing a broad range of strategies to bring about lasting improvements in the health of communities across Hancock and Washington Counties. Initiatives include: increasing the number of children receiving preventive oral exams and treatment, increasing access to preventive health services, promoting active community environments, increasing farm-to-school and healthy food experiences in schools, working with schools to implement Coordinated School Health Programs, and increasing access to nutritious food among people experiencing low income.
