Prescription Drug Take Back Day (10 am)
National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day events are taking place on Saturday, April 29, 2017, throughout Washington and Hancock counties. Community members are encouraged to bring in any unused, unwanted, or expired prescription drugs for this free, anonymous service to any of the following take-back events: The Hancock County Sheriffâs Office is hosting their Drug Take-Back Day from 9:30am to 1:30pm on April 29th at the Ellsworth Chamber of Commerce, located at 163 High Street, in collaboration with Ellsworth Police Department, Healthy Acadia and the Ellsworth Chamber of Commerce. The Machias Police Department is hosting their event from 10:00am to 2:00pm on April 29th at Machias Shop'n Save Supermarket on Dublin Street. The following police departments are hosting Drug Take-Back events from 10:00am to 2:00pm on April 29th: Baileyville Bar Harbor Bucksport Calais Eastport Gouldsboro Indian Township Machias Milbridge Mount Desert Pleasant Point Southwest Harbor Winter Harbor For additional disposal opportunities, the Hancock County Sheriffâs Office, Washington County Sheriff's Office, and the Bar Harbor, Bucksport, Calais, Ellsworth, Mount Desert, and Southwest Harbor Police Departments all have prescription drug drop boxes located in their lobbies. In addition, there is a new prescription drop box on the campus of Blue Hill Memorial Hospital, located in the lobby of the Sussman Medical Building. All boxes are accessible during regular business hours and some are accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Drop boxes cannot take needles, epinephrine pens, or other sharps. The Politics of Food Access: a Civic Engagement Panel (5:30 pm)
How can we work together to ensure that everyone in our communities has access to healthy and affordable food? Join the New England Grassroots Environment Fund on April 29, 2017 at University of Southern Maine from 5:30PM - 6:30PM EST for a discussion with local community groups, academics, and activists on addressing the environmental justice framework surrounding food. Panelists will discuss what individuals and communities can do to ensure healthy, local food is accessible to all. From the unequal distribution of food resources, to the intersection of food and public health, to the impact of environmental justice on our food system, participants will take on these challenging topics, and more, in 60 minutes.
