School Garden 101 (3:15 pm)
Healthy Acadia and the University of Maine Cooperative Extension are thrilled to offer a School Garden 101/201 Course beginning January 16 in Eastport. This course is designed for teachers, staff, school gardeners, or volunteers who work with or are planning a school garden project. This is an exciting opportunity for anyone involved or interested in being involved in school gardens. Participants will learn about soils and outdoor composting; biodiversity, diseases and insect management; growing seedlings, timing the harvest, and season extensions; and how to integrate school gardens into curricular studies and activities. They will also be able to share their own projects and learn from each other about how best to increase the success of school gardens as well as to engage students and expand learning opportunities in and out of the classroom. The 8-hour course is offered in four, 2-hour sessions be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:15pm to 5:15pm on January 16, 18, 30 and February 1, 2018 in the teacher's room at Shead High School, 89 High Street, Eastport. Open Table MDI 1st annual benefit dinner (5 pm)
Open Table MDI, a new community initiative created with the sole purpose of offering free, healthy community suppers, will host its 1st Annual Benefit Dinner at The Neighborhood House, 1 Kimball Road, Northeast Harbor from 5-9pm on Saturday, February 3, 2018. The event will feature live music and dancing with The Blake Rosso Band, Banned From Eden, Mondo Charlie, and Phil Kell & Friends. A silent auction will include over 60 items donated by local businesses and artists. Suggested donation at the door is $8 per person/$20 per family. Beginning February 6, 2018, Open Table MDI, in partnership with Healthy Acadia, will offer free, healthy suppers - open and welcoming to ALL (frequency TBD) - utilizing local and organic food sources when possible - at the Bar Harbor Congregational Church (29 Mt Desert Street).
