Diabetes Prevention Program

According to the CDC, nearly 75% of type 2 diabetes risk is directly associated with carrying excess body weight and with leading a sedentary lifestyle. The CDC's National Diabetes Prevention Program (National DPP), a 12-month, evidence-based lifestyle change program, shows that modest weight loss and adoption of a moderate daily exercise program could delay or prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes and lower risk of heart disease.

This program is proven to prevent or delay type 2 diabetes by helping people with prediabetes and/or those at risk for type 2 diabetes to make achievable and realistic lifestyle changes. Participants who lose 5-7% of their body weight and added 150 minutes of exercise per week cut their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by up to 58%; those over age 60 reduce their risk by as much as 71%.

Program participants receive a full year of coaching from lifestyle professionals to help them to develop the skills they need to lose weight, be more physically active, manage stress, and stay motivated to continue solving problems that may get in the way of making these positive lifestyle changes. Participants learn to make real lifestyle changes such as eating healthier, including physical activity into their daily lives, and improving problem-solving and coping skills.
