Spring in Maine - a Perfect Time for Outdoor Adventures

Guest post by Shannon Cherry, Maine SNAP-Ed Nutrition Educator

Spring is upon us here in Downeast Maine and it’s a perfect time to get outside and get moving! We are fortunate to have an expansive selection of coastal and inland trails all over Washington and Hancock counties.

If you’re looking to explore and enjoy a variety of coastal ecosystems for picnicking, walking, hiking, biking, and nature observation, look no further than the Cobscook Shores waterfront parks near Lubec. With 15 different parks to choose from, you are sure to find something that sparks your interest! For information including maps, park hours, and pet guidelines, check out their website here

Not sure what to pack? We’ve got you covered!  You could always pack a healthy staple, like trail mix or fresh fruit.

I personally like to change it up and think outside the lunchbox ;)  The next time you are enjoying a day of outdoor activity try to incorporate a variety of food groups to keep your body nourished.  This veggie and hummus pita sandwich from eatfresh.org is a great way to get whole grains, protein, and vegetables plus, it’s travel friendly.  Pair it with some apple slices and lemon water for a delicious way to refuel and rehydrate!

Throughout the summer we’ll be showcasing some of the wonderful places to enjoy right here in our community, regardless of your outdoor skill level. Check back here often for new posts!
