Machias Memorial High School Joins Underage Drinking Prevention Campaign

Senior student Maggie Allen, and Principal Nicole Case prepare to display the Parents Who Host banner in the Machias Memorial High School gymnasium.

We're thrilled to announce that Machias Memorial High School has joined forces with Healthy Acadia to help prevent underage drinking in our community.

On December 21, 2022, Machias Memorial High School senior Maggie Allen helped to lead efforts to display of a “Parents Who Host, Lose the Most” banner in the school gymnasium.

Parents Who Host, Lose the Most, a public health media campaign designed by Prevention Action Alliance, provides information for parents and communities about the health and safety risks of providing alcohol to individuals under age 21 and can help increase awareness of and compliance with underage drinking laws. The Parents Who Host campaign includes materials to help participating partners educate their community about the health and safety effects of underage drinking.

According to the Maine Integrated Youth Health Survey in 2019, nearly 1 in 3 high school students in Washington County reported consuming alcohol within the preceding 30 days. By reducing the number of adults willing to provide alcohol to young people, over time we can reduce underage access and the likelihood that teens will drink alcohol and suffer the health effects that come from underage drinking.

Healthy Acadia invites and encourages area businesses and organizations to help us share this key message in our communities.
